St. Kitts/Nevis will be the venue for this year’s staging of the annual Caricom 10K invitational road race which will take place on 2 July, one day prior to the start of the 27th meeting of The Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community.The Caricom Invitational 10K, which has now become a calendar event for athletes in the region, will feature the best male and female long distance runners from each Caricom member state.
The runners will vie for the prestigious Caricom Secretary General’s Challenge Trophy and just under $20,000 in cash prizes and other incentives. The race will also feature a special category for primary school students from St. Kitts and Nevis who will compete for medals and trophies.
The road race, which has become an added feature of the Regular Meeting of Caricom Heads of Government, is being held under the theme: “The Health of the Region is the Wealth of the Region”.
It has been given tremendous support by several major private sector companies from the region, committed to the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
Sponsorship has come from Nestle Caribbean through its locally developed Supligen brand; The Caribbean Credit Card Corporation which has its headquarters in Basseterre St.Kitts/Nevis; Banks DIH in Georgetown Guyana; Sagicor Life Incorporated out of Bridgetown, Barbados and Blue Cross of Jamaica.
The Caricom 10K which is being staged under the aegis of the St. Kitts/Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA) will begin at 10:00am in the west of Basseterre, at a point along the Old Road on the Island Main Road.
The route will see runners travelling in an easterly direction along the picturesque island main road which overlooks the azure Caribbean waters. As they run towards Basseterre, the runners will turn on to Church Street at its junction with Cayon Street. The race will end at Government Headquarters building.
