“Geothermal is highly productive for Agricultural usage,” says Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry. He made the statement as he addressed the audience at the Villa grounds of the Department of Agriculture’s 15th Annual Open Day on Thursday, March 26th, 2009.
The occasion signaled the commencement of the two”“day annual event, held under the theme: “Promoting Economic stability through greater Agricultural and Marine Efficiency”. The patron for this year’s fair is Mr. Sam Powell, a former Director of the Nevis Agriculture Department.
The Premier said that as his NRP led government continues work in geothermal and as they encounter success after success, there are certain connections with Agriculture and geothermal exploration that will enhance the output of food production.
The Taiwanese have demonstrated over the years, a specialty in Agriculture; and it has been noted by Premier Parry that this could be another linkage that could prove highly successful and extremely productive for the people of Nevis.
Premier Parry also addressed the production of pork and other local meat when he noted that the Taiwanese can offer assistance with the increase of the production of good, healthy sources of meat for the residents of Nevis.
The Premier informed the audience that he has been to Taiwan and he has observed the Pork production being done there and he hopes that it can be implemented here on the island.
“I am impressed that the Ambassador of Taiwan to St. Kitts-Nevis, H.C Wu said that his job is to deepen and widen the relationship between Taiwan and Nevis. The time has now come for that relationship to move beyond surface and be more widened and deepened,” said Premier Parry.
During his brief remarks, the Premier cautioned the residents of Nevis to eat more local goods and eat less canned foods. He said that it is recommended that the general public promote farmers by purchasing locally grown foods or even have a backyard garden. “I see a change coming on Nevis as Agriculture is becoming important once again; although there is a need for the industry to be promoted more in the schools and throughout the community,” he said.
Premier Parry said that in support of Agriculture, the government is doing their part by reaching out to farmers with technical guidance and training programs locally and abroad.
According to the Premier, the Agriculture Fair is an important, meaningful event on the Nevis calendar. “Many persons will observe, admire and buy. I want when people leave the fair, they leave with a strong impression that Agriculture is good, honest and the way to go,” he said.
