Keith “King Dis n’ Dat” Scarborough, the 2012 Nevis Culturama Calypso King will not be sent to Anguilla to compete in the Leeward Islands Calypso Competition. King Dis n’ Dat told WINN Thursday that he was informed by Chairman of the Culturama Committee Halstead “Sooty” Byron that the committee would not be sending a representative to compete in the completion and a reason was not given for the decision. The reigning calypso king from each island is usually sent for this competition.
Insisting that the decision was a political one, because of his affiliation with the opposition Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM), King Dis n’ Dat believes any other competitor would have been sent to represent the island in Anguilla. King Dis n’ Dat performed the songs “Calypso”, a song about the declining state of the art form in Nevis, and ‘De Legal System’ a tune about the political battles playing out in the courts. He scored 581 points. He insisted that he would not have performed “De Legal System” in Anguilla if he was sent to compete.
However, Minister of Culture Hensley Daniel told WINN Thursday that the song ‘De Legal System’ was disrespectful to the Premier of Nevis Mr. Joseph Parry as he called him a “dum dum”. Mr. Daniel said he was still offended by the song and that the government could not support him going to Anguilla to compete after performing that song.
WINN FM Contacted Executive Director of the Culture Secretariat Mr. Antonio Abonaty Liburd who confirmed that he received a message from Mr. Byron Thursday morning to inform King Dis n’ Dat that a representative from Nevis would not be sent to Anguilla for the Leeward Islands Calypso Competition but that a reason was not given for this decision. He also alluded to the fact that this is not the first time competitors were not sent to represent Nevis, though he could not recall the reasons for non-representation in the past.
Anguilla knows not what they are missing. What crook in office has the right to ban a man from doing his own thing.
Time to elect some people who know about freedom.
