The Ministry of Culture is seeking to promote Nevisian culture for the 45th anniversary celebrations of Culturama 2019.
Hon. Eric Evelyn, Minister of Culture on Nevis, told the Department of Information on Friday May 10, 2019 that the Nevisian Heritage Village has been earmarked as the venue of a major activity highlighting all things Nevisian, and will also serve to attract greater traffic to the cultural heritage site.
“We want to see more traffic coming through the Heritage Village here at Fothergills. During the Culturama festival this year, this being our 45th anniversary, we are having what we call a Nevisian day.
“We are going to have a day when we want people to exhibit Nevisian pride, and whatever you do on that day would be everything Nevisian. You eat Nevisian. You wear the national colours. You show some national pride and we are actually hoping to have what you call an actual Tea Meeting and we are hoping to have it right here at the Heritage Village,” he said.
Mr. Evelyn stated that the Heritage Village is ideal for staging cultural events and it would help to decentralize Culturama events.
“Here is a fantastic venue to have more cultural events, and thus being our 45th. We are going to start it, and hopefully going forward every year during Culturama we can have one or more activities here because I am all of decentralizing the activities for Culturama, rather than having everything in Charlestown. Decentralize, and the Heritage Village is a fantastic venue to do that,” he said.
Meantime, the Culture Minister who was at the time attending Heritage Village Life, an event hosted by the Ministry of Tourism portraying local culinary delights, expressed satisfaction with the event.
“I think this is one of the sites here on Nevis that is under-visited and underutilized. I mean, when you come here it’s so peaceful. The vegetation, everything is so nicely laid out and the Open Day per se, very impressive.
“I had my cornmeal and fish, and I had my hot bread and butter and I am also going to get some Ital and fish to take away as well,” he said.
Mr. Evelyn used the opportunity to compliment the staff of the Ministry of Tourism.
“I have to commend the staff here at the Heritage Village and of course the staff at the Ministry of Tourism as well for organizing this day…and for making it so successful. I have to commend them very highly.
“I’m very, very impressed. We have a good turnout. We have a good mix of students, persons from the general public. I’ve seen some tourists here as well and that is what we want,” he said, while encouraging Nevisians to continue to eat and be as local as possible and at the same time urging them to support the activities for Exposition Nevis, an annual event hosted by the Ministry of Tourism.
The final activities for the month are the New River Farmers’ Cooperative Open Day at New River on Friday May 17, the Bank of Nevis sponsored Tourism Youth Congress on Tuesday May 21 and Exposition Nevis Tourism Awards on Saturday May 25.
