Nevis Citizens To Benefit From Health Science Scholarship

Director of the Nevis branch of the St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla Trading and Development Company Limited [TDC] Ms. Keesha Jones, last Thursday [June 9] reminded Nevisians that the Nevis Island Administration’s [NIA] first, second and third priority is education.

Ms. Jones, along with Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Mrs. Joslyn Liburd, Health Advisor Mrs. Patricia Hanley, Health Planner Mrs. Nicole Slack-Liburd, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Human Resources Mr. Chesley Manners and Education Advisor Mrs. Christine Springette, showed support of the new and transparent approach to the NIA-Medical University of the Americas [MUA] Health Science Scholarship.

“This scholarship initiative,” according to Ms. Jones, “allows for more people to turn fantasy into fact and return to develop our country, Nevis.”

The NIA-MUA Scholarship would be awarded to two “well deserving high school graduates with sound academic records” who are interested in “pursuing medicine, pharmacy, nutrition, occupational therapy, biomedical engineering, mathematics, biology and chemistry.”

Speaking as a member of the scholarship committee, Ms. Jones said, “This scholarship means that we can have people who may have been languishing in despair.”

Successful applicants, as outlined by Health Planner Liburd who also serves as committee chairperson, must be at least 18 years of age; citizens of St. Kitts-Nevis; have at least five Caribbean Examinations Council [CXC] subject passes including Mathematics, English and one Science subject; already accepted into a tertiary education programme in a science or health-related field and must be active in community service.

A birth or naturalization certificate, high school diploma, certified copies of five CXC passes, copy of acceptance letter from tertiary institution, curriculum vitae, official programme cost sheet, academic and community service organisation references and a one thousand word essay must be submitted as part of the application package.

Mrs. Slack-Liburd and her team are calling on persons to mail their applications to The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Chairperson, MUA/NIA Scholarship Committee, Administration Building, Charlestown, Nevis.

The scholarships, she said, “can be awarded for up to four years of study at the Medical University of the Americas, the University of the West Indies or any four-year United States-based institution” and “will be awarded towards the pursuit of undergraduate studies which lead to a degree at a university or higher learning institution.”

The scholarship committee would be accepting applications until June 29, 2011.
