A two member delegation from the Organisation of American States (OAS) Department of Sustainable Development visited Nevis on Tuesday to hold discussions with the Nevis Island Administration and other stakeholders of the formulation of a National Energy Policy.

Energy Specialist, Sustainable Energy, Climate Change and Natural Disaster Risk Reduction Division Mr. Kevin De Cuba told the Department of Information that the OAS project formed part of a wider regional venture which was managed by the OAS but funded by the European Commission.

“Basically we have all reached out to each other to work together and covering most of the regional island states in addressing national energy policy development,” he said.

Mr. De Cuba noted that the OAS had always regarded the energy sector that promoted renewable energy development and was committed to assist governments in their task of diversifying their economies and to look for cheaper alternatives and more environmental friendly options.

“In this particular case, our visit [to Nevis] is most related to another aspect that is also important in the overall development of sustainable energy which is related to the development of a national energy policy.

“I am here with my colleague Mr. Andreas Jansen he is the Director with German ProfEC, he is sub contracted by us and we have the task to help the Ministry of Public Utilities, Works, Energy and Housing in facilitating the process of collecting information involving all the key stakeholders in the energy sector and making sure that everybody’s visions concerns and opportunities are being addressed in this National Energy Policy,” he said.
