The residents of Nevis will have another opportunity next week to receive cancer care when Dr. Spencer Amory, of the Colombia University College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York, will provide his services at a colon cancer screening clinic from 8:00 am on Monday June 24, 2013 at the Alexandra Hospital.

According to Nicole Slack-Liburd, the Permanent Secretary in the Nevis Ministry of Health, the Ministry is proud to be able to provide access to cancer care services at the Alexandra Hospital in many areas including colon cancer. She said Dr. Amory has conducted several colon cancer screening programs over the past several years and the Ministry welcomes this initiative.

“Although he has been absent from us for the last two years due to some family issues, we are proud to say that he will be back here in Nevis once again performing the service,” Liburd said.

As she encouraged the general public to take advantage of the colon cancer screening service, Liburd explained that interested persons could schedule appointments to meet with Dr. Amory by contacting the Alexandra Hospital at 469-5473.

“We know cancer is one of the diseases that is very prevalent here on Nevis. In 2012, we had an estimated number of over 20 persons diagnosed with cancer and we really stress early detection at the Ministry of Health and so this exercise is part of our cancer screening programme and we welcome the public in terms of accessing the service.

“The clinic will start on June 24th, although [Dr. Amory] would be here for about a week. Those screened on the 24th and abnormalities detected will then be seen further from the 25th to the 28th,” Liburd said.
