November 18, 2008
The Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Joseph Parry declared the 5th Nevis International College Fair (NICF) open, at the locally owned Occasions function hall Monday, 17th November.
“It has long been the Nevis Reformation Party led Governments mission to have at least one university graduate in every household in Nevis. That is why my government has allocated a large amount of its budget to education,” said Premier Parry.
The Premier told the students attending the fair to have questions ready to ask the University representatives. He also asked the university candidates to collect all the University brochures and ask about financial assistance and scholarships.
Entrepreneurship and working with geothermal was recommended by the Premier who said, young people must become educated in areas that would befitting the 21st century.
Premier Parry extended a warm welcome to the overseas exhibitors who he said, “came to help the students discover new tertiary level educational opportunities.”
The Universities represented at the fair were the Medical University of the Americas, St. George’s University, University of St. Martin, University of the West Indies, DeVry University, Monroe College, Schiller International University and Trent University.
During the ceremony, Director of the NCIF, Mrs. Sonita Daniel said International students have unique obstacles to overcome when choosing an appropriate higher educational environment outside of the home country. The NICF is a helpful resource in the prospective students search for a college or university. They have an opportunity to talk to admissions officers and get the scoop on college admissions and campus life.
“I hope that our students and adult learners will seize the opportunity provided by this year’s College Fair and that it will inspire them to pursue tertiary education,” said Mrs. Daniel.
The NICF was first organized in 2002 and it has been geared towards giving Nevisian students the opportunity to gain insight into each University’s curriculum, costs, sports and other extra-curricular activities that can help young people make the right decision for choosing the appropriate institution.
