The Federation’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Legal Affairs, Hon. Patrice Nisbett is in London, attending a Meeting of Commonwealth Law Ministers and Attorneys General of Small Commonwealth Jurisdictions.

Following opening remarks by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, His Excellency Mr. Kamalesh Sharma and the election of the chairperson, the Key Note Paper on “The Role of the Attorney General: Establishing an Independent Attorney-General’s Office in Small Commonwealth States.”

Other matters for discussion are “E-Judiciary and Use of Technology in Court in Small Commonwealth Jurisdictions: The Mauritian Experience”, “Overview of Media Freedom and Defamation: The Human Rights Case for Libel Law Reforms in the Commonwealth,” “Criminal Jurisdiction: Criteria to be considered by States in relation to Competing Criminal Jurisdiction,” “A Report on Juvenile Justice and the Commonwealth :Basic Framework for the Implementation of a Functional Justice System,” and an “Overview of the Alternative Sentencing Programme of the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Division.”

The Nevis-born Attorney General Nisbett and his Commonwealth colleagues will also discuss “Strengthening Public Confidence in the Criminal Justice System”; “Anti-Corruption Project Strategies for Small Jurisdictions,” Strengthening the Office of the Registrar in Final/Appellate, Regional and International Courts and Tribunals,” and  “Promoting Access to Legal Information in Small Commonwealth  jurisdictions.”

Reports on Activities by the Human Rights Unit and on Legal Developments in the field of Maritime Boundaries and Law of the Sera Programme will also be presented at the meeting that begins at Marlborough in London on Thursday.
