St. Kitts – Nevis To Open New Hospital

Basseterre, St. Kitts – Nevis
January 24, 2008 (CUOPM)

District Medical Officer Dr. Norgen Wilson says residents of Sandy Point and surrounding communities are looking forward to the completion of the new Pogson Hospital.

“The decision was a good idea by the government to pull down the dilapidated wooden structure and replace it with a modern building,” the Cuban-trained physician said following a tour of the construction site by Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, Minister of Health, Hon. Rupert Herbert and officials of the Ministry of Health and the Public Works Department.

“Residents of Sandy Point and surrounding communities are very excited to see that we will soon be having a new hospital,” said Dr. Wilson, who has been District Medical Officer for the past 18 months serving the people of Sandy Point, and surrounding areas including Newton Ground, Half Way Tree, Godwin Gut, Conyers, Lamberts, Middle Island, Verchilds and Old Road.

Dr. Wilson said the new services that will be made available including laboratories, x-ray unit, dental lab and a modern gynecology unit will bring efficient and professional health care services to the people of Sandy Point and the surrounding areas.

Construction on the  EC$5.7 million new Pogson Hospital is expected to be completed later this year.

“The people of Sandy Point and the people of St. Paul’s, Newton Ground, Half Way Tree, Godwin Ghaut, Middle Island and Old Road, who would be served by this facility would recognise an increase in the number of services that would be provided here,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

A new permanent 24-hour Emergency Medical Service (EMS) will also be available and no longer will residents of Sandy Point and the immediate surrounding areas wait for an ambulance from Cayon or Basseterre. This EMTS will serve Sandy Point and the neighbouring communities.

  1. Have you any information regarding the Mr Pogson who initiated the hospital at Sandy Point? There was a story many years ago that our family was related to a Pogson who went to St Kitts, but I didn’t really believe it. If you have any information I would be grateful as I am researching the family history.

    Kind regards
    Gill Johnson (Mrs)
